Formed in 1860, the Pony Express was started by a private owner provided faster mail services between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. The route could be covered in about 10 days. The riders weighed less than 135 pounds, and changed horses every 10 miles. Out of 194 Pony Express riders 61 have been identified including William Cody, also known as Buffalo Bill Cody. South of Torrington is Cold Springs where the Pony Express made one of its many stops on mail route. The Pony Express came to an end in 1861 with the arrival of the telegraph.

Fort Laramie
Fort Laramie

Did you know that in 1834 Fort Laramie wasn't a fort it was a fur trading post. Come and explore what life was like back then located 20 miles west of Torrington with most of the actual fort buildings standing proud on the prairie. It is worth the short drive to enjoy the ice cold root beer and to experience how a soldier's life was here in the west. From the signing of the Treaty of 1868 to the oldest running post office Fort Laramie has numerous historical values to not only Wyoming's History but also to the development of the West.
